Gas phase pollutants (O_3, NO_x and SO_2) suspended particulate matter (SPM) and major ions in aerosols were measured for 12 month period at a mountainous site of northwestern Turkey which is suffering from severe forest decline. Gaseous pollutants, SPM and meteorological parameters were measured in hourly basis with automated analyzers. Aerosol samples were collected daily. The long and short term trends in the concentrations of the measured parameters were investigated in order to understand the causes of the observed concentrations of these pollutants. Higher concentrations of O_3 during summer months were consistent with the higher photochemical production from precursor gases (NO_x) with increased solar flux. The diurnal variations of O_3 and NO_2 were 27 and 2.3 ppb respectively during summer. The diurnal pattern of O_3 NO, NO_2 and SPM describes a photochemical smog scenario. Sulfate makes up about 30
