Steam turbine efficiency and reliability are of fundamental importance to the power generation industry. A significant contribution by Hitachi, Ltd. has been the development of long, efficient, reliable last stage blades, which has led to more economical and larger turbine-generators. This paper addresses the design evolution and verification technologies used in developing the 3000rpm 43-in. last stage blade. The 43-in. blade is characterized by the design of a new last stage blade involving the combination of advanced computational fluid dynamics and non-linear structural analysis techniques, and this is described in detail. The results of confirmatory testing for vibration characteristics are also presented.
