Advanced LP turbine retrofits: an economical approach to gain competitiveness

Advanced Low Pressure steam path designs are being retrofitted into existing power plants. The availability of modernization packages represents an opportunity for utilities to improve competitively through significant gains in performance andreliability. This paper describes a recent Low Pressure (LP) nuclear turbine retrofit and related technological advancements including interlocked blades and efficient moisture removal. Specific details of the retrofit, design, installation andperformance improvement are discussed. Technology advances, although described for a nuclear unit, are equally applicable to fossil LPs.
