The Advanced Wastewater Treatment/constructed Wetlands Demonstration Project (Demonstration Plant) was constructed and oeprated at the East Central Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (ECRWWTP) to demonstrate that wetlands can be established in southeast Florida to provide additional treatment of a high quality advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) effluent and to determine the optimal design for full-scale implementation of a wetlands-based water reclamation progra.The physical/chemical/biologicla treatment processes of the AWT Demonstration Plant were designed to remove suspended solids and total phosphors (TP) using coagulation in a solids contact clarifier,fitration and biologicla denitrification using attached growth in a denitrification filter (DNF) and disinfection by free chlorine contact.It was proposed that a combined membrane processes train involving microfiltration (MF) followed by reverse osmosis (RO) could serve as an alternative technology.Side-by-side operation of the two treatment trains allowed a performance and cost evaluation of the two treatment alternatives.Similarly,ultraviolet light (UV) was proposed as an alternate disinfection method for wastewater.Again,parallel treatment process operation of UV disinfection with free chlorine disinfection allowed a cost and performance comparison.
