Traffic calming measures are features and/or design characteristics of a street that cause motorists to drive more slowly and with a greater degree of attentiveness. Traffic calming measures are a way to physically and visually impede speeding. Physically, they alter the street and psychologically, they change the driving environment of the street. They are often installed in response to citizen complaints regarding speeding and cut-through traffic within their neighborhoods. However, traffic calming measures are not treated like most other traffic control devices. They do not have universal warrants or standards such as traffic signals. Most have been implemented case specifically and largely through citizen participation.
