Centrifuge shaking tests were performed on the model caisson type quay wall built of a replaced sand, rubble mound, and backfill stone. The deformation patterns of the caisson type quay wall, the ground behind it, and the replaced sand wereobserved during, and after shaking. Masa-sand and Toyoura standard sand were used as the material fur the ground, and the tests were performed with the model ground with or without backfill stone. As a result, it was shown that the displacement of acaisson during shaking is primarily brought about not by liquefaction of the ground behind it, but by the deformation of the replaced sand and displacement caused by its own inertia.
