Simplification for preparing model in site-specific improvement design studies

One important role of centrifuge is the modelling of site-specific situations so as to assist in design studies and project appraisal. However, the size of sites to be modelled is often large and designs are often sophisticated so site-specificstudies are among the most difficult types of test to undertake. Equivalent substitution is an effective means for simplification to ease the difficulties in preparing the models. This paper presents an example of simplification by means of equivalentsubstitution. The objective of this model study is to compare the efficiency of two different improvement designs for the soft ground beneath a large oil tank. The decision made on the basis of the simplified model results has been proven correct andsuccessful.
