A series of centrifuge tests were performed to investigate the relationships between support pressure and deformation, overall stability of sandy soil of the cylindrical excavation face during the shield tunneling process. The influences ofvarious parameters, such as the embedment ratio, the soil density and the water content on the excavation face stability, are described. In this paper, information related to the collapse pressure, the shape of the failure zone and the behavior prior tocollapse, are given. Two other tests were conducted to examine the influence of tail void on the final earth pressure acting on lining.
