Results of two centrifuge tests are presented including three pile models conducted at RPI to study the effect of liquefied soil lateral spreading on single pile foundations with and without a pile cap. The effect of pile construction method (drilled or driven) is also examined. A pile model instrumented with strain gages is placed inside a 1D model of water-saturated sand constructed in a laminar box. The centrifuge model simulate a fully submerged, granular, infinite, mild prototype slope subjected to base earthquake shaking. The soil profile consists of a liquefiable sand layer on top of a nonliquefiablelayer, with the inflight shaking inducing about 0.8 m prototype permanent lateral displacement in the free field. The experiemtnal results for each of the three pile models are reviewed and compared, and several conclusions are drawn relevant to practical engineering applications.
