This paper presents the results fro mfour centrifugal model tests that have been conducted under centrifugal acceleration of 105g to investigate the effect of using large diameter closely spaced sand drains on the settlement response of soft clay foundations. The aim was to relate the increase in the number of columns, or the increase in the area replacement ratio, to the settlement reduction. Load-settlement performance of the improved ground has been assessed for a range of area replacement ratios. It was found that san drains could have limited effectiveness as a settlement reduction measure. An improvement of 40
