GRP-phenolic composites are inherently fire retardant and resin transfer moulding (RTM) provides several advantages for their fabrication. To facilitate a better understanding of the issues associated with RTM of acid-catalysed phenolic resole resins, the cure has been studied using isothermal differential scanning calorimetry and viscosity measurements over a range of temperatures. The results are analysed using a series of empirical formulas that describe the changes in extent of reaction, heat flow and viscosity with time and temperature. The total heat of reaction is 347 J. g~(-1) and the consequences for RTM processing are discussed. Also identified is the importance of additional cure above 70 deg C to achieve satisfactory mechanical properties.
