How would you like to get your steam unit on the line from dead cold in about one third of the normal firing time? Imagine the savigs in fuel and labor with a procedure that is safe for the unit. Jacksonville Electric Authority dramatically reduces the time and fuel required to start its steam generating units using the Valve Open Start procedure. JEA's large 518 MW unit requires only 8 hours to minimum stable load after dispatch notice with a Valve Open Start, whereas 12 hours are required with a conventional cold start. Dispatchers can now wait for 4 extra hours to assess weather and interchange market conditions. Each start saves about 5000 in fuel alone. Typical startup problems such as "rotor long" and transient vibration are also remarkably reduced.
