The rationale for choosing computer-based learning and three instructional principles (mastery learning, overlearning and automaticity, and pre-requisite knowledge and skills) needed for the introduction of Computer-Based Learning (CBL) in an introductory Information Systems subject with a large enrolment are described in this paper. This paper concludes with a summary of a study conducted in 1993 and 1994 on the use of CBL in a first year Information Systems unit offered by the School of Information Systems, Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia.
