Downloading and processing remotely sensed data such as satellite imagery are expensive in terms of computing requirements and human expertise. A more efficient way of providing information services is through standard object interfaces in a distributed network. The author proposes a system architecture that incorporates OpenGIS specifications in middleware objects that encapsulate remote sensing data and operations. These middleware objects enable client applications obtain services through standard interfaces regardless the file formats and application platforms used to implement the services. End users access remote sensing data and functionality through web browsers or GIS applications in a single, integrated, and virtual system. Objects in different systems developed with this architecture can connect with one another through the standard interfaces for interoperable applications. OpenGIS Specification for Grid is used as interfaces for the middleware objects. Implementation of the objects can be delegated to commercial software packages. The proposed system takes advantage of the evolving interoperability-enabling technology such as CORBA and DCOM.
