This study paper of the Olympic Transportation System represents the combination of several separate and distinct, yet coordinated, efforts to review, assist, evaluate and document the development and implementation of the Olympic Transportation System in preparation for the Atlanta 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. As such, this paper summarizes the results of these several efforts into a single source document to present the full breadth of the issues encountered in the review of the Olympic Transportation System Plans. The scope of the issues involved encompass the utilization of the regional public transportation system, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) and the Olympic Spectator Transportation System (OSTS) in the development and implementation of the Olympic Transportation System Plans.This consolidation of the management, planning, operations, systems and maintenance reviews provides a background of the Olympic Transportation System developmental process over a two-year period, combined with a picture into the operational aspects encountered during the Olympic Games period, July 19 - August 4, 1996, and the Paralympic Games, August 12-27, 1996. A description of the general aspects provided in support of the Olympic trans-portation efforts is presented, followed by a summary of the lessons learned.The lessons learned provide an important perspective into the implementation of these Olympic Transportation Plans and the operation of the significant bus and rail transit services in the challenging environment of the Atlanta 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. The results may be used to assist the future efforts of other cities through a glance into the effectiveness of a transit-emphasized approach to the Olympic transportation access needs and the performance of the transit services and systems in this very challenging, concentrated venue location and high density travel environment. The detailed lessons learned provide a significant benefit to both future Olympic endeavors of other cities, and, likely more importantly, a glance into the potential effectiveness of a multimodal approach to transportation investments and their performance in a very challenging environment.
