In troubleshooting paper spot and deposit problems, the role of analytical instrumentation, particularly Fourier Transform InfraRed (FT-IR) spectroscopy, has become commonplace.However, often the connection between the analysis of a defect or deposit and its most likely source is not sufficiently drawn. This is frequently the result of failure to utilize all the information available from the technique, leading to insufficient specificity in the analysis. The chemical similarities of many papermaking components can blur the distinctions between additives, extractives, and contaminants.This paper examines how a more effective correlation between analytical results and answers to the papermaker's problems can be made. Case studies are presented that demonstrate how getting the most from FT-IR analysis, by using best available technology and detailed spectral interpretation, can produce more accurate solutions to defect and deposit problems.
