The use of Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machines (EPB TBM) is becoming more common in excavating tunnels under high hydrostatic head. With the increasing need to tunnel long distances with no intermediate access points from the ground surface, cutterhead inspection and maintenance is an increasingly important element to consider for a successful operation. Predicting the cutting tools’ life, however, is a difficult task and thereby a risk factor regarding schedule and cost. This paper describes the cutterhead maintenance plan developed and used on the Brightwater West Contract and compares the tool wear data with a tunnel excavated in similar type of ground.
