Infrastructure projects around the world are underway to handle the increase in rail and vehicle traffic in highly developed urban environments. Lacking sufficient surface access, the logical solution is to construct tunnels to alleviate surface congestion. Further, as the volume of traffic increases, the size of the necessary tunnels increases to accommodate a higher flow of vehicles. As a result, TBMs larger than 14m in diameter have been developed to handle this current evolving requirement. This paper addresses the particular design and manufacturing challenges inherent when going to this large diameter machine configuration. Specific project examples are cited and a review of future developments will be discussed.
