摘要

The current clinical consensus is that the success of surgery for patello-femoral joint (PFJ) osteoarthritis (OA) is highly variable and often unpredictable. The estimated success rate of PFJ surgery for QA is 60%, excluding replacementarthroplasty. Within the clinical setting, it is generally believed that reduction of PFJ contact forces and stresses. as well as re-establishment of normal joint kinematics, will decrease joint pain and improve the patient outcome. However, a directcorrelation between such biomechanical variables and patient outcome has never been investigated. Because of the mechanical nature of these surgical objectives, they can be evaluated prior to and subsequent to surgery by using an appropriatepatient-specific computer model of each patient's PFJ, derived from 3-D MRI data. The aim of this study is to measure and calculate an array of biomechanical variables which may be used to assess the patho-mechanics of the PFJ in an OA patients, prior tosurgery.
