Biogases, which are produced through anaerobic decomposition of organic matter, have gained interest as engine fuels because of gas disposal requirements for landfills and sewage treatment sites. The objective of this research was to compare engine performance between three simulated biogas fuels and natural gas. A 1987 General Motors 2.5 liter, naturally aspirated spark-ignited engine was used for this research. The engine was operated over a fuel equivalence ratio (PHI) range from lean conditions (PHI approx=0.65) to stoichiometric (PHI=1), for two speeds, 2350 and 2850 rpm, and two throttle positions, 50 and 100 percent WOT (Wide Open Throttle), at MBT (Maximum Brake Torque) timing and at 5 and 10 degrees retarded from MBT. Performance parameters, including brake power, brake specific energy consumption, and in-cylinder gas pressure were measured.
