The new High Pressure Vessel Code. Section VIII, Division 3 requires linearizing stresses calculated from a linear elastic stress analysis and comparing the results to stress limits given in the code. This code also allows using an elastic-plastic analysis as an alternative approach that avoids the difficulties involved in linearizing stresses in thick-walled pressure components. This paper compares the results of a linear elastic finite element analysis an elastic-plastic analysis of a high pressure vessel subjected to internal pressure. The results show that the linear elastic method is not appropriate for the design of vessels with large diameter wall rations. It is recommended that the design be based on the more accurate elastic-plastic method.
