The fermentation of tetracycline by Streptomyces aureofaciens 3-3 using oil as carbon source has been studied. A good strain, S.aureofaciens 3-3-8-10, which can resist to high concentration of tetracycline and has a higher utilization rate of oil, was obtained by ultraviolet irradiation from S.aureofaciens 3-3. The tetracycline production by S.aureofaciens 3-3-8-10 could reach 15500r/ml with the optimum fermentation medium obtained by orthogonal test, which was 52 percent and 46 percent higher than that of the original strain S.aureofaciens 3-3 when using oil and when using starch as carbon source, respectively.
