Responding to public demands and government mandates, many industries, especiall; petroleum and petrochemical industries, are re-examining the environmental impacts of their products, processes, and management practices. The ISO 14000 holds out the promise to revolutionize environmental protection practices and to promote goo< global corporate citizenship in the world where we live. Implementing a comprehensive environmental management system can be expensive. Costs are especially critical for small and medium size enterprises, many of whom already have problems meeting environmental obligations. However, it has to be emphasized that sustainable pollution prevention initiatives are not necessarily alway; expensive endeavors or financial burdens. Appropriate implementation of environmentally-friendly technologies or practices, coupled with effective environmental management, will not only keep the current costs down but also provide long-term savings.
