In compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations for the electroplating industry, effective pollution prevention (P2) has become one of the main tasks for further development of the metal finishing industries in the following decade. In this paper, an intelligent decision support system, namely IDS-P2EP, for P2 in electroplating plants is described. This is an enhanced system based on the prototype knowledge-based system, WMEP-Advisor, which was developed previously. The enhanced system is featured by adding a variety of process models into it. These models form the basis for developing comprehensive and precise P2 strategies in a plating plant of any size and any type. The application of this system in a plating plant strongly demonstrates that it can greatly help platers significantly reduce a variety of pollutants in waste streams with lowest cost.
