A technique of ethanol fermentation by immobilized saccharamyces cerevisiae combined with membrane distillation (MD) was studied. A free cell fennentor and a immobilized cell reactor ware coupled with a plat MD module separately. Processes of fennention of free cell and immobilized cell and coupled process were experimentally evaluated respectively. In the same cultural condition, ethanol productivity of free cell was 2.4 g /l · hr while that of immobilized cell was 22.6 g / l · hr. Coupled with MD, ethanol productivity by immobilized yeast was 30.0 g / l · hr. With the fermentation proceeding, the permeate flux decreased while the selectivity kept unaltered. The deterioration was likely due to membrane fouling caused by culture medium.
