Core rail freight services in the United States have scored a remarkable recovery. Many services were abandoned or sold, others transferred to government agencies. The traditional rail organization is gone, replaced by more focused service providers, each with specific markets and specific cost and service capabilities. The process of unbundling, and then focusing and then adjusting rates, services, employment levels and assets to specific market needs has taken us a generation. It has been successful when measured in terms of market share and financial performance. But is has come at the high cost of lost jobs and abandoned services. The good new is that the jobs that remain are more secure, and the services that remain are more reliable and relevant.
