The potential of gas chromatography-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-IRMS) to apportion the source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions is assessed. Stable carbon isotopic (δ~(13)C) compositions are reported for individual PAH from coal pyrolysis and combustion, and these are compared with those from biomass and diesel particulates. The δ~(13)C signatures of PAH from each of these sources differ to the extent of providing the basis for applying GC-IRMS to unequivocally source PAH arising from coal carbonisation.
