During the course of estimating the structural behaviour of a racture prone material (maraging steel) with an artificially introudced 3 X 1 mm crack in a subscale model, much higher response was obtained from the crack than expected while carrying out the ultrasonic testing. An attempt was made to explain theoretically this higher amplitude in terms of change of reflection angle of ultrasonic waves, change of orientation of crack faces, release of tightness etc. The theoretical estimates could be successfully used to explain the higher response obtained from the crack on the subscale model.
