Because hydrogen production during severe acidents can endanger the containment or safety-graded equipment, the Belgian Utility requested Belgatom in 1989 to perform a comparative study between the possible mitigative measures. From the outcome of that study, the Utility decided to install Passive Autocatalytic Recombiners (PARs) in the seven Belgian units and mandated Belgatom to carry out the project.
