This paper presents theoretical studies on the modal properties of the suspended bridge deck units in the erection of long span suspension bridge. the finite element model was established by taking into account the geometric nonlinear effect of the cables and it proved to be reasonable and acceptable for predicting the modal properties of the suspended bridge decks. Two cases, one suspended deck unit and three partially connected suspended ceck units, were investigated. The global dynamic characteristics of the combined system of suspended bridge decks with main cables were studied. The comparison between theoretical and experimental results showed a good agreement on the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the system. Some modal characteristics of the suspended bridge deck units are obtained. It is concluded that the dynamic behaviors of the suspended bridge deck units can only be accurately predicted by considering the cable and the suspended deck units as a whole system.
