Blood flow induces shear forces acting on the vessel wall~(1,2). These forces influence endothelium structure and metabolism~(3-6) and the mechanical behaviour of the arterial wall.~2 The arterial wall shear stress~7 is representative of these shear forces; it is the product of blood viscosity and the velocity gradient near the endothelium (shear rate).
