Advances in wireless and optical communications technology have opened the door to radical advances in aerospace instrumentation capability and cost effectiveness, but the promise has proven difficult to exploit. Great strides have been made in sensor technology, but translating these into the hope of ubiquitous instrumentation that provides pervasive and affordable state sensing in the demanding aerospace environment still recedes into the future. Comprehensive systems engineering functional analysis has identified promising architectural and technical options that provide guidance to identify the enabling technology breakthroughs required.
