Characterization of Pressure Transducers for Quantifying Oscillatory Pressure in Spectrally Rich Combustion Environments

A cooperative effort between the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Aberdeen Test Center (ATC), and the Office of the Program Manager for Crusader was initiated to characterize the frequency response of the E30FM pressure transducer. This transducer was specifically designed to withstand the extreme mechanical and thermal environment associated with large caliber regenerative liquid propellant guns (RLPG). However, until recently, the frequency response characteristics of this transducer had not been quantified. This paper discusses the frequency response characterization of this series of transducers with respect to their rise time, natural frequency, and the effects of their thermal protective shield on the fidelity of the oscillatory pressure measured in the 30-mm RLPG at the ARL. In addition to the gun firings, shock tube tests were performed at the ATC (formerly Combat Systems Test Activity) to characterize the transducers in a more controlled environment. Comparisons are made to the Kistler 607C4 and PCB 119A high-pressure ballistic pressure transducers in their calibration, in their shock tube response, and in their performance in the 30-mm RLPG.
