Since the 1930s, plastics were created to be strong, lightweight, durable, and bioresis tan. Recent studies have indicated that over 10 million tons of traditional plastics, which may remain in the environment for decades, will be dumped in landfills this year, with increases projected into the next century. This problem has sparked research into the use of degradable plastics.
