Information management will continue to be a central focus in future generations of manufacturing system. Software implementations of key methodologies such as life-cycle analysis, real-time simulation, cooperative working environments and humanoriented interfaces, which are increasingly numerous and sophisticated, generate much larger volumes of data during all phases of manufacturing. To use these methodologies to their full potential, future manufacturing systems will need much more power in their system-level software and their underlying hardware. This paper presents the conceptual design for TEAM (Teamworking Environment for Advanced Manufacturing), an information-intensive manufacturing system consisting of a next-generation hardware based and a software approach to management of information flow at the system level. The core of TEAM is a paradigm for cooperative working in and between real and virtual manufacturing systems. The TEAM paradigm will provide an impetus for the development of the advanced hardware and machinery that will be needed in next-generation manufacturing systems.
