Generally, in a CAM system used for sculptured surfaces, a mesh consisting of offset and cutter path information is detailed uniformly in order to generate high accuracy NC machining data. As a result, the processing time associated with system programming and machining increases. To reduce this time, a new method is proposed for generating an adaptive mesh by evaluating the error between the required and machined surfaces. With this method, a detailed mesh is generated for areas requiring accuracy, and a less detailed mesh is generated for areas not requiring such accuracy. Using a prototype mesh-generator, the processing time for the CAM system was shortened. In addition, reduced machining time was confirmed using this new prototype generator.
