The analysis of variance (ANOVA) technique is used to investigate curing parameters in an acrylate based UV curable clear formulation. The initial study indicates choice of the test method used by an operator to determine the curing performance of a coating is very critical to the effectiveness of developing a formulation or to consisitetly measure curing performance in quality control testing. In this study, the data analysis result suggests when a reliable test method is used to determine the maximum cure speed of a coating, "the operator" or "the testing date" is not a factor that would influence the test results. Our study shows that a balanced beam tester is more reliable than say a wooden tongue depressor to determine surface cure. Also factors such as the "lamp power", or the "number" of lamps are very important in determining the maximum cure speed of a coating. Furthermore, the data suggests that increasing the "lamp power" has more impact on the maximum cure speed than increasing the "number" of lamps. The objective of this paper is to illustrate the usefulness of a simple statistical method that can be used by formulators to shorten new product development cycle.
