Construction and Development of Hydroelectric Power in China

China is rich in hydroelectric resources, with a total exploitable potential of 378,000 MW, mainly concentrated in the southwest and northwest areas of the country (in the middle or the upper courses of Yellow river and Yangtze river respectively). By the end of 1995, the aggregated hydropower installed capacity of the country had reached 52,18 4 MW, accounting for about 24 percent of national aggregated installed capacity of electric power, and a more hydropower capacity of near 40,000 MW was under construction . By the end of the century, the aggregated installed capacity of the country will be over 300,000 MW, the hydropower capacity of which will be up to 70,000 MW. It is also anticipated that , by 2010, the aggregated installed capacity in the country will be over 500,000 MW, of which the hydropower capacity will be over 100,000 MW.
