Recent effort in improving the predictive capability of the loss inside a draft tube is presented. Two important parameters which affect the accuracy of the CFD tool are the turbulence closure and the mesh resolution. The validation of a newly developed non-equilibrium k-ε two equation turbulence model is presented and discussed through examples. Applications of this improved turbulence model to hydraulic turbine design are also demonstrated.
