The optimization of ozonation processes is limited by the boundary conditions to optimize disinfection, oxidation of micropollutants and minimize formation of disinfection by-products. The ozonation process therefore has to be characterized in terms of the effect of ozone and secondary oxidants. In full-scale water operations ozone concentrations were determined by varying the main treatment parameters such as ozone dose and flow rate. OH radical concentrations were determined by indirect measurement through the depletion of atrazine used as a reference compound. Atrazine is only slowly oxidized by ozone and its depletion reflects the oxidation by OH radicals. The validation of the data was performed by comparing the measured bromate formation with that predicted from model calculations. The good agreement indicated that the description of the treatment process by our model assumptions was reasonable.
