"What gets measured gets done" is a common rallying cry within organizations practicing Total Quality Management (TQM). Yet, one of the most important results often is not measured, that is, the company's overall progress and achievements. The author, a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Examiner, presents a rationale for doing periodic self-assessments against recognized quality models. Various practical approaches to conducting self-assessments, as well as ways to use the results, also are discussed.
