FAST ANALYSIS OF SEMI-VOLATILE AND NON-VOLATILE ADDITIVES IN PLASTIC RESINS

The use of the particle beam interface for introduction of samples into the mass spectrometer (MS) without chromatographic separation, is shown to be a useful method for the analysis of semi-volatile and nonvolatile additives in plastic resins. The method uses full power of mass spectrometry to identify multiple additives in a single matrix.The main features and advantages of this approach are:1. Speed and simplicity: analyses time is 2 min. or less per sample.2. Cost effective: eliminate/minimize use of hazardous and costly solvents.3. Environmentally friendly: saves on solvent waste.4. Easy: results in easy to interpret (conventional) electron impact mass spectra.5. Powerful: covers a large range of semi-volatile and nonvolatile analyses including, additives and oligomers even beyond the mass range capability of the instrument.6. Automated sample analyses by the use of the LC auto sampler optionThe usefulness, speed and simplicity of this approach are illustrated in the analyses of a number of neat additives, additive mixtures and resin extracts.
