Pigmentation of impact polypropylenes can result in diminished impact properties. This work focused on the effect of pigment particle size and pigment carrier systems on the notched Izod and Gardner falling weight impact properties. Notched Izod is largely unaffected by the presence of pigment regardless of particle size. Both liquid and solid pigment carriers increased notched Izod. Conversely, Gardner impact is adversely affected by pigments. As pigment particle size increases, the loss becomes catastrophic. Pigment carriers have little effect upon Gardner impact. The authors' conclude that Gardner impact is a better predictor of molded part toughness! than notched Izod impact.
