The planning of the drilling and the rig upgrading for the HPHT pre-khuff well

In 1992 DMA OPCO (Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company) started the detailed planning of a deep HPHT vertical exploration well that was to be drilled offshore Abu Dhabi on behalf of ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company). Relevant offset data was not available. The nature of the well dictated that an optimised casing design would be required, and that significant rig modifications would be needed to satisfy the requirements of the well. This paper outlines how those challenges were achieved.
