The emission and excitation spectra of Sm~(2+) which prepared in H_2, N_2 and air atmosphere in BaB_8O_(13) matrix were observed for the first time. It was found that Sm~(3+) ion can be reduced into Sm~(2+) in BaB_8O_(13) even at 1100K in air. The sharp lines of f-f transitions of Sm~(2+) (~5D_0-~7F_J) are in the range of 678-800nm under 350nm excitation in this matrix at room temperature. Two sites for Sm~(2+) in BaB_8O_(13) were observed for the samples prepared in H_2 or N_2, and only one site of Sm~(2+) was observed for the sample prepared in air.
