Several models of deformation and failure can be derived from a potential formulation. In the case of a multiaxial stress state the potential should be a function of an equivalent stress. For classical material models with equal behaviour in tension and compression the equivalent stress depends on some special expressions of the stress tensor or the stress deviator coordinates (e.g. VON MlSES-type theories). In the present paper generalized models are developed on the base of three stress tensor invariants (isotropic materials) or on the base of three mixed stress tensor invariants (anisotropic materials). The models contain several material parameters, which are identified by physical and mathematical tests. Such models describe different behaviour in tension and compression as well as other nonclassical effects (e.g. the influence of hydrostatic pressure).
