Frame/Field Decision in Video Coding

摘要

Motion pictures can be scanned progressively or interlaced. The characteristics of the pictures generated by using such two scanning formats differ from each other, and the compression methods of pictures have to be changed accordingly. Pictures and sub-picture units are suggested to be organized in either frame or field format adaptively to get the optimum operation. This paper emphasizes on the relation between organization of pictures and data compression efficiency. According to the relation, a simple but efficient algorithm is proposed for frame/field decision.
