APPLICATION OF CHEMICAL COMPLEXING APPROACH IN THE SOL-GEL PROCESS

During application of sol-gel process to prepare advanced glass and ceramics, it often met some difficulties in use of metal alkoxide precursors, such as low solubility, high reactivity and commercial non-availability. To overcome these deficiency, the complexing approach is often applied with addition of complexing agent. This paper is to present a discussion on application of the complexing approach in sol-gel process, mainly based on the research data and findings in our laboratory with some published results from literatures. It includes complexing approaches to improve solubility of metal alkoxide precursor, to change reactivity of precursor, to transform non - alkoxyl precursor into a complexing species with alkoxyl characteristics, to produce hybrid organic-inorganic materials, and to synthesize an easily-liquidified complex gel by function of complexing agents. Finally, the molecular design of complex gel is discussed.
