Unsteady flow fields induced by a projectile overtaking the preceding shock wave are computationally investigated. A simplified twodimensional flow model is adopted to simulate the flow around projectiles with the unsteady Euler equations. The moving zonal grid approach combined with the Fortified Solution Algorithm (FSA) is employed to handle the relative motion of the projectile and the preceding shock wave. Fundamental flow characteristics are analyzed and the effect of the projectile thickness on the aerodynamic forces acting on the projectile is discussed.
