In this paper we consider framed traffic carried over an ATM-based infrastructure. Due to increased cell loss rates at various locations in the system the frame loss rate may grow excessively. We demonstrate where such situations can occur. Then an upper bound for the frame loss rate at a concentrator is given for cells arriving according to Poisson streams. A more general source model is introduced to demonstrate the effects caused by increasing burstiness. Finally we discuss bow smart cell discard mechanisms can improve the frame loss rate in such an environment.
